The City of Niederwald strattles Hays and Caldwell Counties and was established by German pioneers in the 1890’s. The name Niederwald means “low wood” which refers to the growth of mesquite trees that greeted the Germans when they founded their new community. Niederwald incorporated as a city in 1987.
Located along the old Austin to San Antonio road known as the Camino Real (State Highway 21), Niederwald is 16 miles north of San Marcos and 24 miles southeast of Austin. Niederwald also enjoys easy access to U.S. Highway 183 and State Highway 130. Both roadways provide easy access to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
