Comprehensive Plan Update – Destination Leander
The City of Leander is soliciting feedback regarding our Comprehensive Plan and your participation would be appreciated. Please tell us what you think is important for the future of Leander: leandertx.mindmixer.com.
Destination Leander is the City’s planning effort to update the current Comprehensive Plan. A Comprehensive Plan is best described as a guide to the City’s future. The Comprehensive Plan will inform current and future decision makers where we are now, where we want to go, how we intend to get there, and who will help us along the way. More specifically:
- It will define the City’s biggest assets and challenges
- It will make recommendations about the type and character of development appropriate in different parts of the City
- It will recommend and prioritize policies, key projects, and resources and determines implementation partners
- It will provide guidance to the City in developing and directing future capital budgets
- It will serve as the basis for zoning recommendations throughout the City
The City needs an updated Comprehensive Plan because Leander is growing and changing. Leander has experienced exceptional growth over the past two decades. From a population of just 6,493 in 1990, to a 2015 population estimate of 38,206 residents, the City has evolved from a small, hill country community to a thriving suburban destination in Central Texas. Leander’s location, high quality school system and relatively low cost of living continue to draw thousands of residents to its boundaries.
Leander looks forward to continued growth. Recent infrastructure projects including the toll road and MetroRail line strengthen the link between local residents and the nation’s fastest growing economy in Austin. It is expected that more than 14,000 housing units will be added to the City’s supply during the next ten years. Local leaders recognize that for Leander to capitalize on this market opportunity an update to the Comprehensive Plan was needed.
NEXT STEPS: A Community Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 7, 2015 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This meeting is open to the public and you can drop in anytime. The meeting will be held at Pat Bryson Municipal Hall, 201 North Brushy Street.

The previous Comprehensive Plan was partially adopted from the DRAFT submitted in 2001. Since then the City updated portions of the Plan as they became necessary for continuity and guidance. A Parks and Open Space Plan was adopted in 2004 and a Thoroughfare Plan was adopted in 2007.
In mid 2007 a process was initiated to identify interested citizens for participation in the Leander Comprehensive Plan Update effort. The Planning and Zoning Commission appointed a Comprehensive Plan Update Committee (CPUC) for the purpose of reviewing and updated in the existing Comprehensive Plan. Since that time the CPUC has discussed, reviewed, and identified priorities for recommended policy considerations to a Plan for the City of Leander.
A vision for the community was discussed and considered at length all within a context of today and a distant future. The vision was fashioned from the places and experience of the participants. Community pride, beautiful places and events, education, family and friends, opportunity to grow and be successful, diversity, safety and security, and others, became the fabric of the updated plan.
The recommendations in the Comprehensive Plan reflect the discussions and efforts to date.
